Trade route · Reviewed 12 September 2026
India’s trade agreements for leather goods, market by market.
For each of the 17 markets Hide Fashion serves: which agreement applies, whether it is in force, what it means for a quotation, and what the importer must show to claim it. An agreement is a route the importer may be able to use, never a promised rate.
How a preference is claimed.
Every agreement works the same way. Three things have to be right, and all three are settled before Hide Fashion issues a landed-cost quotation.
- 01
Classify the product
The HS code decides the tariff line, the rate and the origin rule that applies. A leather jacket and a leather bag sit under different headings, and construction details can move a product between lines.
- 02
Qualify the origin
Each agreement sets product-specific rules of origin. The leather, the components and where the work is done all count. Hide Fashion records the material and construction at approval so the origin case is documented, not reconstructed.
- 03
Document the claim
The importer claims preference with the origin evidence the destination customs authority accepts, supported by the commercial and shipping documents. Origin evidence, classification support and export documents are prepared with the order.

Questions
Trade agreements: questions.
Anything not answered here is covered in the 30-minute product review.
Does India have a free trade agreement with the European Union for leather goods?
Negotiations on the EU-India Free Trade Agreement concluded in January 2026, but the agreement is not yet in force. Until entry into force, current EU duty treatment applies to leather goods from India, subject to HS classification and origin. This covers the 7 EU markets Hide Fashion serves: Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain.
Is the UK-India trade agreement in force for leather jackets and bags?
Yes. The UK-India Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement entered into force on 15 July 2026. Whether a reduced rate applies to a specific jacket or bag depends on the product schedule, the rules of origin and the importer’s declarations, all confirmed before quotation.
Which India trade agreements are already in force for the markets Hide Fashion serves?
Australia-India ECTA (Australia); India-Japan CEPA (Japan); Korea-India CEPA (South Korea); UAE-India CEPA (UAE); UK-India CETA (United Kingdom). Each includes product-specific tariff schedules and origin rules, so eligibility is confirmed line by line rather than assumed.
What does an importer need to claim preferential duty on leather goods from India?
Three things: the correct HS classification of the product, evidence that the product meets the agreement’s rules of origin, and the origin documentation the destination customs authority accepts (a certificate or declaration of origin, plus the commercial and shipping documents that support it). Hide Fashion prepares origin evidence, HS classification support and export documents with each order.
Does Hide Fashion guarantee a duty rate?
No. Final treatment is determined by the importer and the relevant customs authority after HS classification and origin review. Hide Fashion states the route that may apply, prepares the documents that support the claim, and confirms the classification before a landed-cost quotation is issued.
